What is ‘step dance’? 

Step dance is also sometimes referred to as ‘stepping’ or ‘soulstepping’. It was developed in its modern form by African American fraternities and sororities in the early 20th century, and involves using the body as an instrument, through performance actions like stepping, clapping and the spoken word. 

You might have seen stepping yourself in popular films like Drumline, Stomp the Yard or School Daze, or even at President Bill Clinton’s inauguration, which featured the skills of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. The documentary film Step – focusing on the senior year of a girls’ high school step team in Baltimore – drew fresh attention to step dance in 2017. 

But don’t let the complex poly-rhythms of the most advanced steppers fool you – step dance is also something that anyone can do! And if you don’t believe us, just ask Khalid Freeman, the renowned stepper and body percussionist behind Soul Clap Fitness.
